More Than Just the Blues

Such an important topic and when you hear the statistics that Joyce shares in this interview its truly so strange that we don’t talk about it more. The Blues, Depression….. We need to talk about it and we also need to know that there ARE solutions. Joyce shares so much wisdom and even better … she shares HOPE on this cast, I am truly feeling honoured to host such a show, and that we can get this message out to the masses that help is available and healing is possible and that it happens.

Enjoy the Episode!

Joyce Bergsma’s Bio:

Joyce Bergsma is a registered Nutritional Therapist, practicing Orthomolecular and Functional Medicine since 2010. Joyce has a BA from Canada and later trained as a Nutritional Therapist in the UK. Her interest is on how food affects mental health and she is an advocate for approachable change for her clients.

Before studying nutrition, Joyce worked for the largest private health insurer in the UK. Since moving to the Netherlands, she’s focussed on where food comes from and how it can be used to best promote our mental health.

Growing up in Canada, the kitchen was the centre of Joyce’s family home. Her mother taught her how to cook from an early age with the vegetables from their garden.

As she got older, she noticed how food affected her mood, energy levels, digestion and stress levels.

When several people close to her started developing serious health problems, she felt there was a connection between the illnesses and their diets. Would a healthier diet create a healthier life?

This interest led Joyce to study nutrition in the UK, where she learned to identify the connections between the systems of the body. She found out how diet, exercise, our environment and genetics affect whether diseases develop or not.

Joyce’s interest in preventing the same depression her close family suffer from inspired her to learn how mental health could be influenced by nutrient therapy. Understanding the challenges of adjusting our lifestyles in a consumer society, she is keen to motivate others in making practical changes that enable their bodies to heal themselves.

Change is difficult, there’s no two ways about it. Joyce works to break down the different factors that contribute to mental health into bite-sized pieces so each step is manageable. We all have busy lives, but making change just happens one step at a time.

Joyce is currently working on developing the Happiness Hub, a place to connect and learn about being mentally healthier. She also offers personal consultations and runs workshops for private groups on Stress Management and Fermenting Foods. You can book online at www.eatlivelovefood.com.

Joyce’s Resources:

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take one step at a time”

Susi Hately’s Bio:

Since 1993, Susi Hately has grown from teaching one or two musicians how to stay pain free while playing their instruments, to becoming a highly credible and reliable source for understanding and successfully using therapeutic yoga to enable people to get out of pain and back to the life they want to live – at home, work and play.

Better Body Balance

Her Signature Style of Yoga Therapy combines principles of anatomy and physiology with the ancient art of yoga asanas, breathing, pranayama, stillness and meditation. All of her sessions are customized to suit individual needs.

She started teaching this way back in 2001 because not every person with back pain or shoulder pain needed the same yoga program. Instead she focused on the person, their anatomy, their movement abilities and their day-to-day lifestyle. . . with a goal to cultivate better body balance.

Today she teaches people who have back pain, shoulder pain, frozen shoulders, repetitive strain injury, and osteoarthritis; people going through chemotherapy, and people who are recovering from cancer treatment; people with neck pain, knee pain, and people rehabilitating from surgery; people with MS; Lou Gehrig’s, as well as people with anxiety, and depression. Clients come from all walks of life – executives, parents, retirees, elite athletes, Olympians, school teachers, dentists, doctors, massage therapists, chiropractors, yoga teachers and more – but the common thing that brings them is always the same, initially – their pain, fatigue or tension is getting in the way of the life they want to live.

In 2001, she started to teach teachers the anatomy principles she uses in her classes each day. They had ah-ha moments in their own bodies as well as ah-ha moments with their students – there was less pain, more ease, and a greater feeling of lightness and strength.

In 2004, she began to train teachers more specifically in therapeutic yoga, and in 2007 she launched what is now called the Therapeutic Yoga Intensive. Over these 5 mind blowing days she teaches the theory and techniques she uses daily with her clients to help them reduce pain, manage long term physiological and systemic issues, recover from surgery and navigate treatment protocols.

In 2007, she began Certifying Yoga Teachers to become Yoga Therapists. Her Yoga Therapy Program is now one of a few IAYT Accredited Programs based in Canada, and is catered to yoga teachers who want to blending the modern with the ancient, who have tried what she has taught and sees the positive impact in their own practice, as well as in the practices of their students and who want to take their knowledge deeper; who want to flourish as therapeutic yoga teachers, and become really good at what they do. Susi has much experience in this world of improving movement and reducing pain and she wants to share it with people who are serious about their development and growth.

Birth Plans. Hospital Preferences

I was so thrilled to have Pip from Birth Savvy on the cast who is amazingly passionate about birth, outcomes, people knowing their options and asking for what they want.

It has been a hugely successful episode in terms of downloads and also in the amount of feedback from mums that it was no doubt a certainty for the “best of ” series.

So very often discussed but never is there really a “what to avoid” or a “where to look”…. here are some tips to consider for your birth plan. Why you need one… why its ok to call it a plan and what might never be accepted if it was in one.

So as you can imagine this week is a very important message that all mums to be would love to hear. One to certainly be shared many times!! So please do share this episode and it’s links/resources with those pregnant women around you especially those nearing the end of their pregnancy.

And Have you subscribed yet to Mum’s The Word to get all the episodes delivered to your phone as soon as they are released each Friday? You can do so  on iTunes.

ENJOY this week’s Episode and thanks for listening!!

Pip Wynn Owen ’s Bio:

Pip is a childbirth educator, midwife and mother of four who is a passionate advocate of empowering parents to create better births.

Over a decade ago Pip was charged with the antenatal classes program and teaching at a large private hospital. Working as a midwife at the time, Pip decided to enroll in formal childbirth education study through Birth International. The study dramatically changed her understanding and approach to prenatal education.

Birth Savvy

She launched “Birth Savvy – Ask for What You Want” in early 2013 which promotes Better Birthing through education. Workshops are held throughout WA and focus on helping parents get the birthing experience they deserve through increasing their confidence and knowledge and promoting an equal partnership with their obstetricians.

Since the inauguration of “Birth Savvy”, Pip has discovered the complimentary practice of hypnobirthing, and has since qualified as a Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner.

Through her passion for improving birth experiences for couples Pip has become a sort after commentator on maternity issues and makes regular appearances on National Radio and TV. She has also been asked to written opinion pieces for national newspapers.

She has also contributed to magazines and online blogs, such as Practical Parenting, Empowering Birth and www.onyamagazine.com

Pip was also awarded the National Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner of Excellence 2014/2105.

Pip’s Quote:

“Don’t stress about the birth. Its just one day, enjoy your pregnancy, the birth is just a small part.”

CAST 022
Insights from a Naturopath Mum

It was so lovely to have Edwina share her insights. A mum of 4 a Naturopath and a recent graduate of The Changing Habits Course, Edwina had so much to share on our interview.

X Dr Kaz Jaffe

Edwina Murphy-Drumer's Bio:

Prior to starting Eudaimonia, I spent 15 years as a mother to four beautiful kids, 7 of those years being a solo gig. But to take a leap even further back, I had only recently graduated as a Naturopath when my first bub arrived. Needless to say I didn’t get much of a chance to grow my business as a naturopath because inside the next three and a half years I managed to pop out another two mighty fine human specimens. Number four came along four years later …. sheesh that was a big gap!! However all these lovely little people certainly proved to be mighty fine human guinea pigs in my endeavour to produce flourishing humans.

Knight in shining armour

Throughout this time, despite all my knowledge and best efforts I struggled to flourish. I was at times 20 kgs overweight, and constantly tired. Whilst this certainly bothered me, I always had a great excuse ….. Big build (Ha) ……. Mother of four ….. Single mother …… normal life challenges …… ra ra ra ……

I knew there had to be a solution. I became determined to find it. Excitingly, two things happened. (1) Knight in shining armour! (2) An inspiring woman!

(1) Knight in shining armour! Short version of an absolute fairytale……. I was totally set up by mutual friends to meet a lovely South African man whilst he holidayed in Australia. Had 3 days together. Fell madly in love. Man left country. Skype went into melt down. 1 year later Man came back. This woman HAPPY! Oh yeah baby! Happy = Healthy

(2) I tapped into the awesome inspiration that is Cyndi O’Meara. It was through her that I eventually stumbled upon her 4 Phase Fat Elimination Diet….. finally I was equipped with a tool to help me work out what foods really worked for me and what didn’t. Finally my health took a massive leap in a positive direction.

In February of 2015 Cyndi released the Changing Habits Education Course, and you can bet that I was numero uno in line to sign up. This was the golden ticket I needed, in order to re-engage my confidence, and to share my passion for Nutritional Medicine with the world. So head down bum up, I worked my but off and was super thrilled in December of 2015, to be one of only 15 Inaugural Graduate from this wonderful course.

So it was with a combination of life experience and dedicated study that I started Eudaimonia as an avenue to share my passion with those that want it.
